Be Remarkable: Thinking Far Beyond the Box

Aug 12, 2025

There’s a quote that says, “Average people compare themselves with other people. Extraordinary people compare themselves to their own potential.” This speaks to a higher calling, a reminder to look beyond what’s good, or even great, and instead strive for greater.

What does greater look like? It’s not just about thinking outside the box, but going so far beyond the box that the box doesn’t even exist. Imagine a mindset shift where you stop looking at the norm, stop comparing yourself to others in your field, and instead focus on the untapped potential of your unique ideas and capabilities.

Good, Great, or Greater?

We’ve all been taught to think outside the box. It’s what we hear in every training, every motivational speech, and every business strategy. And yes, that kind of thinking can lead to good results and even great outcomes. But greater requires a shift in perspective:

  • Good is following what everyone else in your industry does.
  • Great is improving on those methods.
  • Greater is redefining the game entirely.

For example, in real estate, lead generation is the talk of the industry. It’s what every agent focuses on, what every training emphasizes. But what if you thought bigger? What if instead of chasing leads, you focused on building referral generation systems?

Referrals come from relationships, trust, and the kind of value that makes people evangelists for your brand. It’s not just transactional-it’s transformational.

The Danger of Relatable

In a world where people crave connection, it’s tempting to aim for relatable. Relatable feels safe because it’s tied to what everyone else is doing. But relatable is also average. It keeps you in the good-to-great category, while the remarkable agents are the ones breaking the mold.

Remarkable agents aren’t just relatable, they’re unforgettable. They create extraordinary moments, deliver exceptional value, and stand out in ways that others can’t replicate.

How to Think Far Beyond the Box

  • Focus on Your Uniqueness: Good strategies often come from mimicking what others have done. Greater strategies come from leveraging what makes you you. Tap into your imagination and ask, “What can I do that no one else is doing?”
  • Invest in Relationships, Not Transactions: Lead generation is about finding people who need your service. Referral generation is about creating advocates who believe in your service. Shift your energy from chasing leads to building lasting, trust-based relationships.
  • Question the Norms: Instead of asking, “How do I do this better?” ask, “Is there a completely different way to approach this?” The remarkable path often lies in an entirely new way of thinking.
  • Create Remarkable Moments: Relatable might get you in the door, but remarkable creates stories that others want to share. Whether it’s through unique events, exceptional service, or personalized touches, find ways to leave an indelible impression.

Being good is easy; it’s tied to what everyone else is already doing. Being great takes effort and skill. But being greater means stepping into the unknown, leaning into you  imagination, and building something uniquely yours.

Relatable might be safe, but remarkable is where the magic happens. Don’t settle for what’s been done. Create something so different, so extraordinary, that it redefines expectations and leaves people saying, “Wow.”

Ask yourself today: Am I aiming to be relatable, or am I striving to be remarkable? The difference between the two is where greater lives.
